Personality:
Dipper Pines is a barely teenaged boy with an awkward cracking voice, an abhorrence to doing his own laundry, and a hard-to-explain sweating problem. He is, honestly, not a lot to look at upon first inspection, between his small stature and less than stellar hygiene. But, like with most things, Dipper is a lot more than what he seems at first glance. Underneath that hot mess of prepubescent boy is a sharp mind, a strong heart, and a brave soul who isn’t afraid to fight monsters and face death for the sake of his family.
To begin breaking down what makes Dipper tick, let’s look at what he considers his foremost defining quality: his brain. Dipper is incredibly intelligent for his age. Not only is he book smart, capable of doing complex math equations on the fly years above his grade level, but he also excels in thinking on his feet in dangerous situations. He is both cunning and resourceful, able to get himself and friends out of remarkably dangerous situations with just his wit and pure determination multiple times over. Also, despite having these smarts, and knowing he has these smarts, Dipper never loses his sense of wonder, and he is a naturally curious kid who encounters every new and bizarre experience with the same sense of awe as the one before. The world is full of interesting, wacky things, and Dipper wants to know everything it has to offer.
However, this all doesn’t come without its own problems. Dipper can absolutely get wrapped up in his own head and steer himself wrong. As his sister rightly put it, he gets in his own way. He’s prone to over planning for situations and utterly sabotaging himself, especially when it comes to romance. He’s also socially awkward, having grown up without very many friends other than his sister, and was often bullied both for being smart and for the wacky birthmark across his forehead shaped like the Big Dipper. He’s a worrier who sometimes catastrophisizes situations far beyond what is necessary, leading him to becoming paranoid and distrustful of others. Furthermore, Dipper has wrapped himself up in this image of him as The Smart One so much that it’s seeded feelings of inferiority, admitting once in a tense situation, that he sometimes uses big words he doesn’t actually know the meaning of in order to look smart because if he isn’t The Smart One then he doesn’t know who he is.
That being said, Dipper is a lot more than just his brain and his preconceived notions of genius. Dipper often sells himself short in every other department, but the truth of the matter is that he is far braver than he will often give himself credit for, and his anxiety and paranoia will rarely get in his way of standing up to a dangerous situation where someone he loves is in trouble. Examples of note include him standing between an alien drone that obliterates targets based on readings of fear and his injured uncle. Dipper not only stood in front of this thing and screamed at it to come at him, but the drone in that moment failed to detect fear and instead just self destructed, when much earlier in the day it had activated and attacked them solely because Dipper couldn’t get his emotions under control. Dipper is perfectly capable of being a reasonably frightened preteen boy, but if you put his family in danger, all bets are off.
It is important to point out, however, that for all these good qualities of his, Dipper does actually skew morally grey when the big picture isn’t at stake. For all his investment in saving the universe and helping the town, Dipper is not afraid to be underhanded or bend rules to suit his needs. If he sees something important that needs to happen for the greater good, then he is not above breaking laws to do this. Hell, even if there is no greater good, and the reasons are entirely selfish, like breaking into a movie theater his family got kicked out of, or shredding documents that proved Stan was committing mass tax fraud, he will still do these things if he’s set his mind to it. He is also not above petty vengeance, either, if he feels justified. Despite his sister opting not to ruin the life of the snotty rich girl who antagonized her for several episodes, Dipper wouldn’t take it lying down and instead took it upon himself to expose her family as frauds with absolutely zero remorse. He then proceeded to bring this up every chance he got over the course of the series to keep rubbing it in her face. Not only is Dipper petty, but he has a stubborn streak a mile wide and absolutely holds grudges, especially if it’s because someone messed with his sister.
All in all, Dipper is many things wrapped up in the body of a small nerdy boy, but at the end of the day, that’s exactly what he is. His vast intellect will always be held back by inexperience, and just because he thinks he’s mature for his age, doesn’t mean he is. He’s still just a kid who’s trying to figure out who he is in the grand scheme of the world, and he still has a very long way to go. He makes mistakes, he can be selfish, and he can be a brat, just like any other kid his age. Luckily by the time he’s coming to the game, he’s figured out one very important truth, and its that no matter what, his family will always have his back. With that support, there isn’t a lot in the world that can scare him. Probably.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:
Dipper is a normal human and has no special powers of his own. He’s smart, but not supernaturally so. As far as weaknesses go, he’s really just a small thirteen-year-old, so while Dipper can certainly take a beating, he’ll go down with force relatively easy. It is also of note that Dipper is extremely ticklish to the point that Mabel was able to weaponize it against Bill while he was in possession of Dipper’s body.
He does, however, have a number of interesting items that probably should get a proper explanation.
Magnet Gun: This one is nearly identical to the magnet gun Ford carries, its just a little more beat up. Just like the name suggests, it’s a gun that shoots magnetic pulses rather an bullets and had two known settings. It can create a magnetic pull strong enough to rip metal fillings out of a persons mouth at 100 feet away. It can be used in a number of applications, like pulling metal objects to yourself, or rappelling off a metal wall (Dipper once used it to anchor himself to an alien craft while it hurled itself across the sky going god-knows how fast). It can also emit strong magnetic pulses strong enough to disrupt and disable alien technology.
Dipper’s is prone to malfunctioning and will sometimes shut off or act faulty when activated. In the gun’s defense, it was built thirty years ago.
President’s Key: A gilded old fashioned key that can “open any lock in America,” according to the person who gave it to Dipper. Dipper has used it twice in canon: Once to unlock the stockade his Uncle was locked in, and once to access the supernatural black market underneath Gravity Falls. It’s unclear if the key has supernatural properties or if the door to the Crawl Space just had a normal lock, but it seems like the key works on most locks so long as the lock itself has a traditional keyhole.
The journal lists an oddly specific condition in that the Key should only work on locks made earlier than 1877, but in canon its seen working on newer, present day locks. I’ll leave it to the mods just how much Dipper can utilize this and what it will and won’t work for.
